Ihlara Valley is located in Aksaray's Guzelyurt District. It has one of the most prominent canyons in the world. Ihlara Valley, with its 14-kilometre length, 120-meter depth, and thousands of habitats, is unlike any other canyons. It has the distinction of being the largest canyon where humans have lived in history. Ihlara Valley is home to hundreds of churches and shelters, as well as fairy chimneys and easy excavations of rocks around the valley. It has been a major cultural and civilization centre.
When you leave the valley, you will encounter unique beauty in fairy chimneys and Selime Cathedral. In the Cappadocia region, the mummies Embalmment of cats were discovered in the past. This was just as it was in ancient Egypt. In the Ihlara Valley, 17 mummies have so far been found. Twelve of the mummies are on display at Aksaray Museum. The remaining five are on display at Nigde Museum. Most mummies date back to the 13th and 10th centuries. "Bast", a goddess with a cat head, was the first to embalm cats. This tradition was passed on to Anatolia, and it is still practiced in the Cappadocia region.
Agacalti Church, Daniel Pantanassa. The central area of the structure has a free cross plan. A high hooped dome is placed on squinches. The arms of the cross have cradle-squinches. These frescoes date back to the period prior Iconoclasm, or the period between the 9th and the 11th centuries. These figures depict scenes such as Annunciation and Nativity, Adoration with the three Maggies (death Mary), Flight into Egypt, Holy Baptism and Koimesis (death). It is located at Belisirma Village, Ihlara Valley.
The church has an irregular hexagonal plan and a flat roof. It is engraved concave in the apse direction towards the east. As the entrance, the collapsed apse serves as a barrier. The original entrance door can be found at the northern wall. Lady Tamar, the wife of Amirarzes Basileios, decorated the church during Sultan Mesut II's reign. These figures depict the scenes of Deesis and Metamorphosis as well as the Ascension of Seljuk Sultan Mesut.
